Nutrition Coaching

What is nutrition coaching?

Coaching is like driving your car with a GPS navigator. As your GPS, I will tell the directions and the road to take. However, your car will not move without you. You will have to get in the car and start driving. Your speed and the complication of your problems will determine how long it will take you to reach your destination.

Why is nutrition coaching better than traditional counseling?

I offer a 12-week long nutrition coaching package because it takes time to find the roots of a problem and reverse the process that took several years to develop.

Can I reach my destination by myself?

Sure. You can use a map, stars, river systems, internet and other marks in order to find the right road. Working with me saves you time and energy, gives you convenience and speed.

What if I am not sure if it will work for me?

You can schedule a free 15-minute discovery call, so you can determine if I can meet your needs and if we are a good match to work together.

How does nutrition coaching work?

2. Food diary

You keep a food diary for several days.

4. First session

A 1 hour long conversation via video or phone to find out the missing information and to build a strategy on how to achieve the desired result.

6. Next meeting

We meet once a week (for about 45 minutes). We discuss what happened, what was successful and what needs to be corrected. Then, we make a specific plan of action for the next week.

1. Questionnaire and Lab results

You fill out a detailed questionnaire that includes questions about your medical history, tests, medications, lifestyle, habits and diet. Also you need to submit the most recent available lab results.

3. Analysis

I analyze all submitted information in order to find out what factors led you to your problem. Finding the causes  will keep you from repeating the same mistakes over and over.

5. Homework assignment

You will get an assignment to complete during the week.

Our goal is long-term success, not short-term relief!

Insulin Resistance

When cells have less insulin sensitivity, the body has to make more insulin to bring blood sugar back to normal. Insulin is a hormone builder. It builds our reserves of energy for a rainy day (in the form of fat).

As a result, weight is very easy to gain and very difficult to lose. The more weight we gain, the more insulin resistant we become.

In order to break this vicious cycle, we need to start working on reducing insulin resistance. As soon as insulin resistance begins to decrease, excess weight will begin to melt away and with it will melt away your risk for Type 2 Diabetes.

Help is needed

You may have insulin resistance if

You are overweight and struggling to lose weight. Your body mass index (BMI) is above 24
Your figure resembles an apple. Your fullness is concentrated in the abdomen and waist
You have metabolic syndrome (high blood pressure, high sugar, high bad cholesterol, high triglycerides, excess belly and waist fat)
You have previously had gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or had a baby weighing more than 9 pounds (4 kg)
There is a lot of stress in your life
Your parent or sibling has/had Type 2 diabetes
You are physically active less than 3 times a week
You have thyroid problems
You have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
You have a non-alcoholic fatty liver
Sleep little at night (less than 7-8 hours) or sleep too long during the day

Your analysis on HOMA-IR is higher than 1.9.

  • A level above 1.9 is the onset of insulin resistance.
  • A level above 2.9 is a significant level of insulin resistance.
You have chronic obstructive sleep apnea (frequent stopping of breathing during sleep, usually accompanied by loud snoring).

For those who live in the USA

Few people here know about HOMA-IR. Even doctors. In this situation, you can test your fasting insulin and fasting glucose. Based on these results, HOMA-IR can be calculated using the online HOMA-IR calculator.

Prediabetes

The main cause of prediabetes is insulin resistance. The cells already have such poor insulin sensitivity that the body cannot cope. As a result, we see increased sugar and increased insulin levels.

When insulin is high, the body tends to store energy instead of burning it. The more storage we have, the stronger insulin resistance becomes. Strong insulin resistance will make our blood sugar soar. With time, doing nothing or doing the wrong things will move us toward Type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes increases the risk of:

  • Constant deterioration of vision.
  • Kidney problems. Many people with uncontrolled diabetes can be seen in dialysis centers. Dialysis is where the blood is passed through a special apparatus to cleanse the blood because the kidneys no longer can do this.
  • Heart problems. 90% of people with diabetes have a chance of having a stroke within 10 years. That’s 90 people out of 100.
  • Ulcers, burning, numbness and even amputation of the legs due to damage to the nerves and poor blood circulation.

You have prediabetes if

Fasting glucose 100-125mg / dL (5.5-6.9 mmol / L)
Glucose level 2 hours after starting a meal 140-199 mg / dL (7.8-11 mmol / L)
Don’t wait when everything will be so bad that you would give everything to go back in time.

Type 2 diabetes

A woman that has had diabetes for 10 years came to me.Despite medication and a low-carb diet, her A1C was 9.5. Fasting sugar was around 9 (163). After eating, the sugar level was between 8.5 (153) and 15 (270).

On the third week of our work, we saw our first sign that we were moving in the right direction. This was our first fasting sugar 4.6 (83)! Sugar AFTER eating also went down. We got the first 7 (~ 126), 6 (~ 108) and even several fives (~ 100)!

And we did not take any additional drugs or magic pills! Only food, some physical activity and our great desire for SUCCESS.

But I’ll start from the beginning.

The second type of diabetes usually develops as a result of a certain lifestyle and diet.Drugs in most cases are just “Band-Aid’s” to cover the symptoms. They don’t fix the causes of the problem. With Type 2 diabetes, the main problem is that the cells are INSULIN-RESISTANT, insulin can’t open the door. Since the CAUSE of Type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance, high blood sugar is a SYMPTOM.

Outdated approaches to diabetes work on SYMPTOMS.

For example:

CARB COUNTING

MAIN IDEA: we count and eat certain amounts of carbohydrates at every meal.

RESULT: Despite having the same amount of carbohydrates in the diet, over time blood sugar gets higher. Progression of disease is expected. It is expected that at some point in the future we will supplement our diet with medications.

RESULT:

  • The problem of insulin resistance has NOT been resolved. The cells are still poorly responsive to insulin. Blood glucose jumps up like crazy from harmless amounts of carbs. In cases of high fat approach (keto) I noticed:
  • Fasting sugar levels are often still high.
  • People complain of deterioration of their thyroid gland (hypothyroidism), hair loss, constipation and the appearance of kidney stones.
  • A lot of nutrients need to be supplemented and this translates into high expenses $$$.
  • Despite good A1C results, glucose tolerance test results tend to be WORSE than they were before. This is because the problem of insulin resistance has not been resolved. It is like if our toilet is clogged, but instead of cleaning the pipe, we stop using the toilet.
Other very popular approaches are LOW CARB and HIGH FAT diets (aka Keto).
MAIN IDEA: Carbohydrates are evil! Let’s chase these evil spirits from our life!

My approach is different. We target the cause in order to improve symptoms.

My approach is different. We target the cause in order to improve symptoms.

The cause of Type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance. That means in order to bring sugar down, we work on decreasing insulin resistance!

THE RESULT: We are not afraid of carbohydrates, yet blood sugar goes down. Without medication.

In our case, at the 3rd week of working on insulin resistance, we saw awesome progress! Despite having MORE carbohydrates in the diet, the sugar level was LOWER! Without additional drugs, expensive dietary supplements and tedious calorie counting! Because if the approach is correct, then the results will be good too!
